Director of Clinical Research

The Orthopaedic Innovation Centre was established in 2010 as a research and contract services bureau, offering a unique combination of capabilities that support medical device testing and clinical research. Our mission is to enable the development and evolution of medical technologies, research, and education.

The Concordia Joint Replacement Group (CJRG) is an orthopaedic surgical group specializing in primary and revision hip and knee replacement at the Concordia Hospital and adjacent Concordia Hip and Knee Institute. Surgeons of the CJRG hold academic appointments with the University of Manitoba and have lead orthopaedic research at the Concordia Campus since 2003.

Purpose

The Orthopaedic Innovation Centre is seeking a full-time Director of Clinical Research. This person will assume a management level position within the company, reporting to the Chief Executive Officer. They will directly manage OIC’s clinical research staff (currently 3 personnel).

The Director of Clinical Research will lead the clinical research department, facilitate multiple large-scale research projects, and develop and implement OIC’s strategic clinical research plan in collaboration with the CJRG. They will develop new research projects and programs, apply for and obtain operational research funding in collaboration with CJRG surgeons, and initiate research collaborations with leading national and international institutions.

The Director of Clinical Research will help craft and implement a long-term, large-impact program of research at the Concordia Campus. They will seek an appointment (null, adjunct, associate) at the University of Manitoba and will engage with and supervise graduate students to further the research program.

Key Functions

Management of OIC’s and CJRG’s clinical research department

Coordinate and lead all clinical research studies from formulation to publication
In parallel with the CJRG, conceptualize and design new research studies, write study protocols and budgets, seek out and apply for funding
Oversee research ethics, privacy committee, and other compliance approvals as well as identify and mitigate potential risks
Negotiate research agreements and contracts
Manage the budgets of all clinical research studies including billing, invoicing, and monthly reporting to executive
Prioritize and optimize patient enrollment across multiple on-going studies
Perform data analysis, statistical analysis, medical writing, abstract and manuscript submission, ensure timely dissemination of the research across a range of applicable audiences
Effectively manage clinical research staff including hiring, training and performance management
Engage with, supervise, and manage graduate students on arthroplasty research projects, ensuring the completion of high-quality research
Recognize opportunities for new research by; maintaining up-to-date research knowledge, identifying gaps in the medical literature, identifying research opportunities based on technological advances and medical or societal trends such as:
- Radiostereometric analysis
- Arthroplasty registries, big datasets
- Surgical robotics
- Smart implantable devices, wearable devices
- Personalized medicine, optimized outcomes

Lead and coordinate clinical research (examples include):

Develop pan-Canadian arthroplasty studies with Canadian Arthroplasty Society (CAS) network sites
Develop international collaborative research studies involving arthroplasty registries
Spearhead cross-discipline research projects involving clinical research, implant retrieval, finite element analysis, mechanical testing, motion capture, wearable devices, artificial intelligence and more
Assist with the expansion of OIC’s clinical research breadth to include other fields of orthopaedics (spine, sports medicine, trauma, pediatrics) and other medical/surgical fields

Secure research funding, as feasible via affiliation(s) with the University of Manitoba

For self, as an early career researcher (CIHR, CORL, NSERC, Industry) / post-doctoral researcher (CIHR, Research MB, Winnipeg Foundation, Concordia Foundation), as permissible
For each of the research programs at OIC/CJRG: multi-centre RCTs, robotic surgery, artificial intelligence, RSA, arthroplasty registries, implant retrieval, personalized medicine and more
Operating and Discovery grants (CIHR, CORL, NSERC, Arthritis Society, Industry)

Manage clinical database

Oversee maintenance and upkeep of the CJRG’s 20+ year clinical database, ensure a high rate of data capture and data quality
Collaborate with local research groups to implement advanced data mining projects to elucidate outcomes from the CJRG’s patient database
Partner with local and international centres to combine datasets, extract specific data for industry partners as well as publish novel results for global impact

Requirements & Competencies

The candidate will have/possess:

PhD in natural sciences or engineering, related to medicine (required)
relevant clinical research experience (required)
relevant project and/or people management experience (required)
Strong medical writing skills (required)
Fundamental knowledge of biomedical statistics and experience with common statistical software (SAS, SPSS, R) (required)
Track record of peer-reviewed research funding (desired)
Well-rounded knowledge of arthroplasty, orthopaedics, surgery, and medical devices (desired)
Experience with large datasets, data sharing modalities, big-data analysis techniques and best practices (desired)

Salary & Benefits

This position is full-time, permanent employment. This position allows for some flexibility to work remotely but will require >50% on-site presence.

Salary range for this position will be $90,000-$100,000 per year, plus an annual bonus of up to $10,000 based on performance and decided upon by the Board of Directors. Key performance indicators shall be negotiated and agreed upon prior to starting the position.

Probationary period for this position is 6 months. Full health, dental, and vision benefits shall be in effect after the probationary period has ended. Three weeks of paid vacation shall be including during full-time employment.

Travel to collaborator’s sites, research conferences, industry tradeshows, seminars, training sessions, and other opportunities will be paid for by OIC, upon approval by executive.
