JOB OVERVIEW
Reporting to the EVP, Research and Advocacy, the Senior Manager, Surveillance plays a key role in summarizing cancer and related disease statistics, as well as the interpretation of complex data and scientific research into the development of evidence-based messaging and decisions for the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS). The position plays a critical role in the development and release of Canadian Cancer Statistics publications and products and in the development of a pan-Canadian cancer data strategy.
This role can be based anywhere in Canada.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:
Canadian Cancer Statistics publications
- Provide epidemiologic and communication expertise to support the development and release of Canadian Cancer Statistics publications and products.
- Liaise with health-based national and regional organizations, government agencies and other cancer surveillance stakeholders.
- Support the work of the Canadian Cancer Statistics Advisory Committee, overseeing the budget and project management.
- Lead in knowledge translation for the project.
Pan-Canadian Cancer Data Strategy
- Liaise with key stakeholders in the Pan-Canadian Cancer Data Strategy.
- Provides support in the development and implementation of the pan-Canadian Cancer Data Strategy.
- Project manage CCS’s role in implementing the cancer data strategy working closely with internal teams.
Internal expertise
- Manage the surveillance team and activities including planning and budgeting.
- Provide knowledge translation expertise related to cancer statistics and surveillance for internal and external inquiries related to cancer statistics and surveillance, including for the public and media.
- Contribute to the development of CCS cancer control policies.
- Provide expertise to research programs and represent CCS as a knowledge user on select research projects.
- Review selected cancer information and other CCS materials for accuracy.
- Critically evaluate individual research studies and bodies of scientific research to draw conclusions and synthesize the results of this research in briefing notes, position statements, and information materials.
- Support senior leadership as necessary.
- Recruit, engage, and retain qualified employees to meet business priorities.
- Provide support and direction in the development, alignment, and accomplishment of objectives through on-going performance feedback, recognition and coaching.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate degree with a focus on epidemiology, public health or population health. PhD level preferred, or MSc in epidemiology or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience with a strong interest in knowledge translation.
- Bilingualism is an asset.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience or training in public health or cancer control.
- Experience/training in disease surveillance.
- Experience in knowledge translation work.
- Experience working with multi-disciplinary teams.
- Experience in working with diverse partners
- Excellent statistical analysis and interpretation skills.
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
- Flexibility for rapidly changing priorities.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information.
