About Us

The Robarts Research Institute within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University has a mission to accelerate medical discovery. Through a powerful integration of basic and clinical research, we are driving major advances that impact on many of today's most devastating diseases.

 

The mission of the research is to examine existing healthcare and geographical databases in Canada in an effort to determine the prevalence of heart disease, stroke and dementia and prepare heat maps in order to identify areas of the country with less vs more disease, and identify factors responsible for the difference.

 

Responsibilities

The Research Associate will apply their expertise and knowledge to a research project under the direction of Principal Investigators (PIs), and will carry out and oversee original and independent research to assist the PIs in achieving their research outcomes in the area of epidemiology of cardiovascular disease, stroke and dementia across Canada.  The role will provide guidance and support to the research team and assist in resolving issues that arise in the research environment.  The Research Associate will also support and operationalize new and innovative research opportunities, develop research and project plans, evaluate and interpret research results involving heat maps, develop models and correlations, and prepare reports and other written material for presentations and/or submissions to various stakeholders as required.

 

Qualifications

Education:

-   Master’s Degree in Epidemiology

-   PhD in a relevant discipline is preferred

 

Experience:

-   3 years’ working experience in a related academic research environment in the area of epidemiology

-   Experience preparing and publishing manuscripts

-   In-depth knowledge of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and dementia, with experience using CIHI and CANUE (or similar) datasets is preferred

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

-   Knowledge and background in neurology and neurosciences

-   Knowledge of dementia and stroke as documented by publications

-   Familiarity with regulations and guidelines governing research ethics in an academic environment and with best practices for reviewing and writing ethics submissions

-   In-depth knowledge with methods for research design, implementation, and analysis

-   Familiarity with techniques for updating, managing and extracting data from a research database

-   Communication skills to describe technical concepts effectively to both novice and sophisticated users

-   Attention to detail and proofreading abilities with an excellent command of the English language and an ability to complete detailed analytics and reports

-   Ability to collaborate across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes and support work beyond one's own unit

-   Ability to work in a manner that models best practices in confidentiality standards

-   Ability to provide solutions and ideas for improvement by using imaginative approaches where constructive thinking and innovation are required

-   Proven ability and natural inclination to develop relationships by interacting with people in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner

-   Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve research goals

-   Advanced skills in software and applications used to produce and analyze research outcomes (such as SAS, SPSS)
